BSNL 3G in Ubuntu (megafon E352)

I recently procured a BSNL 3G prepaid connection. Yes gone are days where we opt for postpaid connection. It boils down to pay per use today. BSNL seems like the best best around in TN (chennai) or Airtel would be the choice to go with. I purchased a megafon E352 (Huawei) modem 14.4 Mbps. I am a Ubuntu user and hence would love to see it work with no hassle.

Ubuntu has improved a lot, leaps and bound in supporting 3G data cards. After plugging it, the modem was detected and configured in seconds as shown below.

Impressed by the megafon E352 russian model, wrapped for huawei. This comes with a custom dialer if you want to use that (gorgeous looking with the same features as in windows). The custom dialer requires Qt (KDE) :(. In the first laptop my son Ram installed KolorPaint which automatically installed the KDE modules (Qt).

In the second laptop it failed as I didn’t install any of the KDE programs before.
If you have issues try the script available in sakis3g.org, it works like a charm.
